An die „Universal-Edition“! 1
Wien, I

To Universal Edition, 1
Vienna I

I received the first edition of Beethoven's Sonata Op. 78 on June 22, 1923; thereafter, in the year 1924, the autograph manuscript appeared, 2 and I immediately revised the text. As early as March 20, 1924 I gave the second edition my imprimatur. 3

However, I find no copy of the second edition, revised according to the autograph manuscript, in my collection. Would you be so kind as to have a copy of this sent to me?

I have been asked about this by many people, but am unable to give any information.

With many thanks in anticipation,
and with kind regards,
[signed:] H. Schenker

Footnotes

1 Writing of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary.

2 A facsimile of the Sonata Op. 78 had been published at the end of the previous year (Munich: Drei Masken Verlag, 1923). Schenker records being shown a copy of it by Otto Erich Deutsch on February 1, 1924, and feeling delight that it confirmed one of his hunches. He then had it on loan from Deutsch from February 4, returning it on the 18th, collected a copy of his first edition from UE the same day, received proofs of the revised edition on the 21st and returned them to UE on the 22nd, inspecting the new corrections on March 20 (diary, OJ 3/6, pp. 2629, 2630, 2636, 2637, 2646).

3 Illegible annotation in left margin at this point, probably in Schenker's hand.
