Footnotes

1 In gathering 21 (= pp. 321‒336 (Eng. transl., 242‒55)), there is no detailed study of the Brahms symphony; but as part of a wider study on pp. 325‒26 (transl., omitted from 245) of works by C. P. E. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Brahms, Schenker cites passages ("groups") in all four Brahms symphonies in which the composer restricts scale-step motion and uses several motives with the effect of the "organic unity essential to a cyclical movement."
