Bei Mama . ⇧ !√ ⇧ Philharm. Konzert ( Mottl ): 1 Schubert s Symph. VI Cdur : Meist verfehlte Technik des Holzbläsersatzes (Hbl. ohne † Fagott, Horn, oder Str.(!), im Gegensatz z.B. zum Klang einer Flöte auf Fagott u.s.w.!) Marschartig, also „Schubertisch,“ in allen Sätzen!). Der letzte Satz wohl der gelungenste u. satteste. (Von Haydn – Mozart oder Beeth , aber ringsum keine Spur; alle Technik auch viel zu unreif, um überhaupt in die Nähe jener Meister zu kommen). Bei Baron Alphons . Dank für Förderung. Ausweichende Antwort betreffs des II. Bandes. 2 © Transcription Ian Bent, 2017 |

At Mama's place. ⇧ !√ ⇧ Philharmonic Concert (Mottl): 1 Schubert's Symphony No. 6 in C major: Mostly poor technique in the woodwind writing (woodwinds without † bassoon, horn, or strings(!), in contrast, e.g., to the sonority of a flute with bassoon, etc.!) March-like, thus "Schubertian," in all movements! The last movement decidedly the most successful and satisfying. (But not a trace anywhere of Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven; all aspects of technique far too immature to come anything like close to those masters.) At Baron Alphons's place. My thanks for his support. Noncommittal reply concerning volume II. 2 © Translation Ian Bent, 2017 |

Footnotes1 This subscription concert by the Philharmonic Orchestra under Felix Mottl took place, according to the Neue freie Presse, at 1 p.m. on December 2 in the large hall of the Musikverein Building. The program included Schubert, Symphony No. 6 in C major, Karl Goldmark, Orchestral Scherzo in A major, Op. 45, and Hermann Goetz, Symphony in F major, Op. 9. (The concert was reviewed the next day by Julius Korngold, who favored this last work and called for a revival of Goetz's music.) 2 Alphons Rothschild having funded the printing and promotion costs for Schenker's Harmonielehre (hence the thanks), which is volume I of the Neue musikalische Theorien und Phantasien , Schenker is here unsuccessfully seeking a financial guarantee for the forthcoming volume II, Kontrapunkt . |
