Fortdauernde Demonstrationen wegen einer czechischen Schule in Wien. Kein Zweifel, daß die Deutschen die Pflicht haben jegliche Sentimentalität beiseite zu lassen u. die czechische Schule zu sperren. Im eigenen Interesse eines weniger kultivirten Individuums, einer weniger kultivirten Nation liegt es, daß der Representant [sic] der höheren Kultur sich erhalte, obendrein besser erhalte, als der weniger kultivirte. Wenn einmal die Slaven, die augenblicklich durch Aufteilung der europäischen Türkei mächtiger geworden sind, die Germanen aus dem Sattel heben sollten, was Gott verhüten möge, so wird die Katastrophe nicht nur die Germanen, sondern auch die ganze Welt betreffen; denn unabänderlich bleibt der Charakter jeder einzelnen Rasse u. Nation u. so werden Slaven bis ans Ende der Zeiten ein im Grunde traumverlorenes, untätiges Leben führen ohne Drang zur Arbeit, zur Betätigung wahrer Schöpferkraft. Man stelle sich ein solches Passivum an Stelle des germanischen Aktivums vor u. man sieht Wissenschaften fallen, Künste sinken, Industrien vergehen u. gemeine Not des Lebens auf den Trümmern dieser Güter einziehen. Wenn die Böhmen es soweit gebracht haben, als wir es heute antreffen, so verdanken sie es den Deutschen, deren Schule sie gemacht haben. Und wenn w man z. B. von einer nationalen Musik dort spricht, so ist nicht zu vergessen, daß ohne deutsche Organisationskraft in Sachen der Musik ein Smetana gar nicht denkbar war. {268} (Genau so verhält es sich mit Chopin in Polen, dessen Geist in deutscher Synthesenkunst geboren wurde.) Und wenn nun heute die Böhmen darauf dringen, daß ihre Kinder nicht in deutscher, sondern in czechischer Sprache lernen, so beweist diese Tendenz allein, daß ihnen mehr um die Muttersprache, als um den Besitz einer Kultur zu tun ist. Also ob die Muttersprache Kulturgüter ersetzen könnte! Was nützt aller nationaler Dünkel den Amerikanern, da wenn sie nun einmal keinen Raphael u. Rembrandt hinter sich ha ttben? So hat auch diese Großmacht die Strafe dafür ereilt, daß sie die hohe Kultur der Deutschen der Arroganz der unfähigen slavischen Rassen geopfert hat, die sich als desto reichere Individualität fühlen, je weniger sie es sind.

Wenn die Sozialdemokraten den Czechen im Kampf gegen die Deutschen beistehen, u. zw. im Namen der Gleichheit aller Nationen, so übersehen sie in bornirtester Weise, daß sie selbst ihre Entstehung als Partei dem Kopfe eines eEinzelnen verdanken. It lies in one's own interest as a less cultivated individual, or a less cultivated nation, that the representative of higher culture is maintained and, moreover, better maintained than that of the less cultivated. If the Slavs, who have suddenly become more powerful as a result of the the division of European Turkey, should – God forbid! – manage to unsaddle the Germanic peoples, the catastrophe will not affect merely the Germans but the entire world. For the character of every individual race and nation remains immutable, and thus Slavs will basically pursue their dreamy, unproductive life, without a drive to work, to be active in a truly creative way. Imagine such a passive state of affairs in the place of Germanic activity, and you will see the sciences wane, the arts in decline, the collapse of industries, and the onset of general impoverishment of life on the ruins of these institutions. If the Bohemians have come as far as we find today, they have the Germans to thank, whose example they have followed. And if one, for instance, speaks of a national music, then it should not be forgotten that a Smetana would not have been at all imaginable without German organizational efforts in musical matters. {268} (It is exactly the same with Chopin in Poland, whose intellect was born in the German art of synthesis.) And if today the Bohemians insist upon their children learning not in German but in the Czech language, then this tendency alone is sufficient proof that the mother tongue is of more concern than the possession of a culture. As if the mother tongue could replace cultural artifacts! Of what use is all national arrogance to the Americans if they have no Raphael or Rembrandt? There it is simply a matter of buying up these artifacts.
It would likewise be sensible for the Bohemians who are resident in a German city to use the opportunity of this residence for their children, in order to transmit to them that culture which guarantees them an agreeable existence. Of course it is no longer to be hoped that the steep decline of Austria since 1848 is to be halted. Austria is becoming more and more a Slavic nation, and may soon share its rank with the Balkan states. Thus even this superpower has suffered the punishment of having sacrificed the high culture of the Germans to the arrogance of the impotent Slavic races, which consider themselves to be richer individualities the less they actually are.

If the Social Democrats support the Czechs in their struggle against the Germans, and indeed in the name of equality among all nations, then they are overlooking in the most egregious manner that they themselves owe their existence as a party to the brains of an individual. But once all equalization has been achieved, then the punishment of God will rage against the human race; and finally the plundering, too, will be at an end!
