Sedan-Tag!! 1 Die Morgenblätter bringen noch immer nicht Befreiung von der nun eine Woche lastenden Spannung; nur deuten sie darauf hin, daß Alles einem guten Ende entgegen gehe. 2

Brief (wie ich glaube einen gelungenen!) an die Feuilleton-Redaktion der „Frankfurter Ztg.“ geschrieben. 3 — Brief an die Steuerbehörde mit Ankündigung eventueller Schwierigkeiten.

Erfreuliche Karte von Mama, daß sie von Wilhelm 100 Kronen erhalten u. heute in Wien anlangt.

Sedan Day!! 1 The morning papers still have not brought any respite from the tension that has burdened us for a week now; they merely hint that everything is heading towards a good outcome. 2

Letter (in my opinion, a successful one!) written to the feuilleton editor of the Frankfurter Zeitung . 3 — Letter to the tax authorities notifying them of possible difficulties.

Delightful postcard from Mama, saying that she has received 100 Kronen from Wilhelm and that she will be arriving in Vienna today.

1 Sedantag: semi-official memorial holiday in the German Empire celebrated on the second day of September to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Sedan in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War. At this battle, which also made the unification of Germany possible, the French emperor Napoleon III was taken prisoner with 100,000 of his soldiers.

2 This entry refers to the Battle of Galicia (August 23 to September 11, 1914), a larger series of battles between Russia and Austria-Hungary during the early stages of World War I. The Austro-Hungarian armies were initially successful (Battles of Kraśnik and Komarów), but finally defeated (Battles of Gnila Lipa and Rawa) and forced out of Galicia, while the Russians captured Lemberg and, for approximately nine months, ruled East Galicia.

3 Concerning his manuscript „Das deutsche Genie in Kampf u. SiegOJ 21/2, [1]“, which Schenker submitted to the Frankfurter Zeitung on September 7, but which was rejected on September 26 (OJ 11/18).
