Endlich ziehe ich das Fazit des Prozesses u. erläutere ihm noch einmal, was er nun deutlich vor sich sehen kann, – daß mir nämlich darum zu tun war, Lie-Liechen als gleichsam eine res dele derelicta ² öffentlich in Beschlag nehmen zu dürfen, was vor diesem Prozesse unmöglich war!

Um ½6^h erscheint zum zweitenmal (gemäß meiner Bestellung) Herr Freisinger u. bittet mich {875} um Theorie-Unterricht mit Rücksicht darauf, daß er gerne den Beruf eines Kapellmeisters ergreifen möchte. Obgleich mir die Armut des Petenten naheging, hielt ich doch an mir u. betonte, daß mir augenblicklich jede Hilfeleistung unmöglich ist, u. zw. deshalb, weil ich selbst unter der Teilnahmslosigkeit der Wiener, sowohl der Regierung als wie der Presse u. der Musiker zu leiden u. folglich sie erst zu überwinden habe. – Auch widerstrebte es mir, auf einen puren Wunsch hin, für dessen Berechtigung ich keine Beweise in der Hand hatte, im voraus mit einer Leistung mich zu engagieren, die mir selbst doch nur Schaden hätte bringen müssen!

Aufsatz von Robert Scheu im „Berl. Tgbl.“ über die Deutschen ³ setzt in ziemlich gewandter Ausführung das Wesen des Deutschen auseinander, wie es alle Gegenstände u. Probleme der Welt ergreift, bewältigt u. verarbeitet, um mit noch nicht dagewesenen Konsequenzen die Welt zu überraschen. Bedauerlich ist nur, daß ein solcher Aufsatz unmöglich auch die letzten Tiefen des Problemes [sic] darstellen kann, auch wenn der Autor Einblick in sie hätte! In diesem Falle möchte ich indessen glauben, daß der Schriftsteller das große Problem nicht so tief gesehen hat, als es wirklich ist. —

Von größerem Wurf ist ein anderer Aufsatz in der „Mittags Ztg“, der sich die Annäherung des Islams an Deutschland auf der Basis der Moral zu erklären sich angelegen sein läßt! ⁴

Complete repayment of my debt to Dr. Steinitz, at the same time a letter to him, in which I ask him to deduce my poverty from the punctuality of my payment: I appeal to his experiences that in such cases – just to impress – the well-to-do like to strut about on their buskins ¹ of credit. In the end I summarize the trial and explain to him again what he can now clearly see ahead of him – namely, that it was my purpose to be allowed to claim Lie-Liechen for myself publicly, as a res derelicta, ² so to speak – something that was impossible before this lawsuit!

A break in the storm actually brings a break in the clouds – at 9:30 in the morning, a rainbow stretches itself across the Ottakring mountains!

At 5:30, Mr. Freisinger appears for the second time (as I requested) and asks me {875} to give him theory tuition, on the grounds that he would be keen to become a professional conductor. Although I was moved by the petitioner's poverty, I kept it to myself and stressed that, at present, any assistance would be impossible, and indeed because I am forced to suffer the indifference of the Viennese – the government, as well as the press and the musical world – and I must first overcome this. I was also bothered by his pure desire, which I could not justify on the spot, to engage me in advance in a service that could only have brought harm to myself!

An article by Robert Scheu in the Berliner Tageblatt about the Germans ³ discusses in a rather eloquent manner the essence of German character as it embraces, overcomes, and deals with all objects and problems of the world in order to surprise the world with hitherto unknown consequences. It is only regrettable that such an article is also incapable of presenting the ultimate depths of the problem, even if the author had insight into them! In this case I should thus like to think that the author has not understood the great problem as deeply as it really is. —

Of greater import is another article, in the Wiener Mittags-Zeitung, which is disposed to explaining the convergence of Islam with Germany on the basis of morality! ⁴
