Meine Vorhaltung, daß es nicht angehe, sich selbst den Zeitverlust anzurechnen, Trinkgelder einzustecken, – dem anderen aber die Zeit zu stehlen, erwidert der Junge im Geschäft mit – der Streichung des Auftrages! Das gehe ihn nichts an, sagt derselbe Junge, den es am Vormittag soweit angieng, daß er den Auftrag übernahm. Wir verloren darüber Ruhe, deren wir beide bedurften, Arbeit, u. mußten obendrein ins Caféhaus gehen!

Typically Viennese: in the morning, an electrician is asked to come at 2:30 in the afternoon; in order to receive him, we both go to the Reisnerstraße. But the electrician does not appear, and so we make a complaint about him at his shop. There we are told that he will indeed be coming, etc. My objection – that it is not proper for him to make allowances for his own lost time, to accept tips, but to steal time from someone else – to this the young man in the shop replies by cancelling the job! It doesn't bother him, the same young man, who went so far that morning as to take on the job. As a result we lost our peace, which we needed, and work; and moreover we had to go to the coffee house!
