Footnotes1 On 7 May 1915 a German submarine torpedoed and sank the RMS Lusitania, a British ocean liner on its way from New York to Liverpool. While most of those lost in the sinking were British or Canadians, the loss of 128 Americans in the disaster outraged many in the USA. The sinking contributed indirectly to the entry of the United States into World War I in 1917. |
