Ueberall wird die 300. Wiederkehr des Todestages von Shakespeare u. Cervantes gefeiert. Soviel ich ich den verschiedenen Aufsätzen, Leitartikeln, Feuilletons entnehmen konnte, schien mir keiner {206} Shakespeares Wesen ausfindig zu machen. Was von ihm über ihn geschrieben wurde war so beschaffen, daß es ohneweiters auch von Gerhart Hauptmann oder Schnitzler gesagt werden konnte. Freilich klang aus allem Geschriebenen der Vorbehalt, daß er größer sei, als alle anderen Dichter, aber allein der Vorbehalt macht noch keinen Beweis der Größe. Denn eben nur dieses, warum Shakespeare als größer empfunden wird, hätte gesagt werden sollen. —

From what I can make of the various essays, lead articles and feuilletons, it seems that no one can identify the essence of Shakespeare, {206} What has been written about him has been formulated in such a way that it could easily have been said about Gerhart Hauptmann or Schnitzler. Of course, all that was written included the proviso that he was greater than all other poets; but this proviso on its own is still not a proof of his greatness. For precisely there it should have been explained why Shakespeare should be perceived as greater. —
