Here I encounter an unpleasant adventure: as the officer on duty fills out the information on a sheet of paper – the procedure was now more comprehensive than the first time – he asked me whether my parents were still alive. As the rubrics included the names of my father and mother, I initially thought only about my father, in spite of the question, and gave as the answer: "no longer alive." The officer now puts this comment down beside my mother's name, too, and I regarded it as no longer suitable to suggest a correction, as an angry discussion over this might possibly ensue, as to whether he should have asked about my parents collectively or about father and mother individually, etc. Also the conditions were not suitable to encumber a further delay, as the procedure had at any rate taken long enough.

The rich man: if the world cannot understand that, instead of merely two or three bedrooms, he might have more – five or six – villas or castles, then it cannot, in his view, have any meaning at all. In no way, and least of all, can it have the meaning that the great poets or thinkers wish to impart to it.

The businessman: supply and demand. There is probably the greatest demand for bread; so why is it still so cheap? If a businessman's pricing at all times corresponds organically only to the value of his wares, would the world still get excited about it, as, for example, it does these days? But it doesn't otherwise occur to people to get upset about necessities of a different sort, such as death, and loss, if they understand them merely as necessities. Does not general sensibility also clearly show that one apparently accepts that the determination of prices has an unreal basis and has the least to do with supply and demand? The aniline factories in Germany {222} have teamed up to respond to an increased demand with a lowering of prices, made possible by the reduction of manufacturing costs. If the law of supply and demand were true, wouldn't the factories have to sell all the more dearly, the cheaper it could manufacture the products and the stronger was the demand for them?
