5, cloudless. On account of intense heat, we stay home.

— Work; extracts made from the folder of Bach [analyses]. — From Cube (letter= OJ 9/34, [21]): he expresses himself very aptly concerning Vrieslander, he regards the latter's denial of the Urlinie as attributable to his lineage(?). 1 He encloses a review from the Deutsche Tonkünstler-Zeitung that, in spite of giving it every recognition, speaks about the Urlinie as an idée fixe. Voß will remain in the area [of northwestern Germany] for the sake of his father. — Afternoon snack on the terrace. — At 4:15, in a brisk wind, to the VermunttalLie-Liechen picks alpine roses which are unfortunately past their best. Call of the Girl from the La-Larein Valley (known as LieLiechen) 2 [music in Schenker’s hand, written on two staves of printed staffpaper pasted in:] Bravo, Heinrich! Composed on July 2, 1930, in Galtür Hans is obliging in every respect. —At 9 o'clock, summer lightning, a thunderstorm during the night; it wakes me, then I fall asleep again immediately. {3491}

Footnotes

1 In his letter, Cube described Vrieslander as "a rather inflexible Lower Saxon type." (The question-mark in the diary may indicate Schenker's uncertainty about this: Vrieslander was born in Münster, in Nordrhein-Westphalen, though not far from the border of Lower Saxony.)

2 A play on Jeanette Schenker's nickname ("Lie-Liechen"), the sound of carefree singing ("la la"), and the name of a valley near Galtür (the Lareintal).
