Footnotes1 On September 18, 1932, the Österreichische Arbeitersängerbund (Austrian Workers’ Choral Society) organized a mass event in the Vienna Stadium in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the district of Vienna. Conceived not so much as a mass cultural event but rather as a political demonstration of power, it was dubbed the "Concert of Five Thousand." Under the direction of the two federal choral conductors, Heinrich Schoof and Franz Leo Human, a total of eighty organizations and twenty workers’ singing schools participated, together with delegations from the Socialist Workers’ Youth and several dance groups. In addition, the 120-strong Vienna Symphony Orchestra took part. |
