⇧ Halb-trüb – ganz angenehmer Spaziergang auf bisher unbekannten Wegen. Enge Straßen, einbahnig für Straßenbahn u. Autos, hohe Häuser, auch 12-stöckige – in diesem unfertigen Erdteil, der so oft noch zittert u. bebt – gebaut werden sie von der Berliner Firma Siemens & Schuckert, ¹ auch von Arbeitern der Firma! — Geschäfte ohne Zahl, wer nur kauft die vielen {38} [recte ] Schuhe, Kleider, Wäschestücke, Handtaschen, Gürtel, Seifen, Puder, Lippenstifte usw., viele Geschäfte schreien in großen Lettern „Liquidation“, u. bis auf wenige Ausnahmen macht Alles einen Tandelmarkt-Eindruck. Neben letzten Errungenschaften der Technik Primitivstes, besonders was Hygiene anlangt. Die Stadt ist ihrer Bevölkerung über den Kopf gewachsen – Kulturstufen zu überspringen nicht möglich — Ich erblicke entsetzt eine Hochschwangere im Kindesalter. — Gehe an einem Blumengeschäft vorbei u. sehe – o Schreck! – blaue Rosen, einen ganzen Kübel voll schönster Rosen, aber blau – blau!! — Brief an Wilhelm: frage, ob ich über Pernegg reisen soll (?!?) — Nachts um ½11^h bin ich im Badezimmer eingeschlossen, das Schloß ist offen, aber die Klinke schnappt nicht. Ich poche heftig an die Tür, nach einer Weile pocht es ans Fenster, ich öffne, auf rätselhafte Weise kommt der Diener durchs Fenster u. es gelingt ihm mit einiger Anstrengung die Tür zu öffnen. (Wenn das einmal meinem Heinrich passiert wäre!)

Narrow streets, one-way for streetcars and automobiles, tall apartment houses, as much as twelve stories high – in this unfinished continent which shakes and trembles so often. They are built by the Berlin firm of Siemens & Schuckert, ¹ even by employees of the firm! — Countless shops; but who will buy the many {38} [recte ] shoes, clothes, underwear, hand towels, belts, soap, powder, lipsticks, etc.? Many shops advertise “Liquidation” in large letters; and, with few exceptions, the whole gives the impression of a flea market. Alongside the latest achievements of technology, the most primitive conditions, especially as concerns hygiene. The city has grown above the heads of its people – it is impossible to leap across cultural levels. — I am shocked to see a heavily pregnant female of childhood age. — I pass a florist and see – to my horror! – blue roses, an entire bucket full of the most beautiful roses, but blue – blue!! — Letter to Wilhelm: I ask whether I should travel via Pernegg (?!?). — At 10:30 in the evening I am locked in the bathroom; the lock is open but the door handle doesn’t engage. I knock loudly on the door; after a while there is a knocking at the window. I open it and a servant comes through the window in a strange way and succeeds, with some effort, in opening the door. (If that had ever happened to my Heinrich!)
