Auf der Straße begegne ich dann dem Militär, das wahrscheinlich vom Friedhof zurückkommt. Es [ist] interessant zu sehen, wie sich – trotz deutscher Schule – auch im Militär der Volkscharakter ausprägt: jeder der reitenden Soldaten trägt an einem hohen Stab ein kleines Fähnchen – noch nicht mit dem Hakenkreuz – die Musiker sind auch zu Pferd, der Pauker, voran, schlägt wild auf die zwei Becken los, die am Halse des armen Tieres befestigt sind. Die Pferde zu zügeln u. z. B. die Trompete zu blasen will auch gelernt sein. Alles hier macht einen operettenhaften Eindruck, Operette, Prater, Tandelmarkt. —

⇧ Postscript: Coming up to my room, I hear the clip-clop of horses and see from my balcony a procession led by the military on horseback and followed by more than thirty of the newest, most beautiful automobiles. I then encounter the military on the street; they are probably returning from the cemetery. It is interesting to see how, in spite of German training, the character of the people is stamped even on the military: each of the soldiers on horseback bears a little flag on a tall staff – not yet decorated with a swastika. The musicians are also on horseback, the tympanist at the front; he beats wildly upon the two drums that have been fastened to the poor animal’s neck. To rein horses and, for example, play the trumpet at the same time must also be learned. Everything here gives an operetta-like impression: operetta, Prater, flea market. —
