Nur zwei geistliche Herren beobachten außer mir das Schauspiel „ . . ein eruptus“ sagt der Eine – die übrigen Menschen sind anderweitig occupiert. — Ich fühle mich gar nicht wohl, nehme Pillen, die Cabine ist eine {90} Hölle trotz Ventilator u. zugeführter Kaltluft. — Chirocco!! —

⇧ A night of interrupted sleep. It is unbearably hot in the cabin, the ship is tossing and turning violently. As I try to get up, I don’t succeed immediately; I must lie down a while longer. After breakfast I feel better again; at any rate it is better to eat than to fast. — New passengers! — As we are about to leave Puerto Colombia, there is an eruption right underneath the ship, a small one but significant enough. Like clouds, the ground swells up as if boiling; who knows how many thousands of meters deep? The water becomes loamy and resembles a strudel behind the ship. Besides me, only two clergymen observe the spectacle: “an eruptus,” says one of them; the other people are occupied with other things. — I do not feel at all well, take pills; the cabin is an {90} inferno in spite of a fan and cold air being introduced. — Scirocco!! —
