1 "Ein Bekenntnis Rubinsteins," Neues Wiener Journal, February 6, 1912, pp. 4–5, reporting a hitherto unknown letter from Anton Rubinstein to the Leipzig publisher Senff, dated September 11, 1889. The letter is quoted in extenso, and in the course of it he expresses his conviction “that the art of music is absolutely dead, that there are not eight measures worth a penny …” and that there is neither vocal nor instrumental music performance that “rises to the shoe thongs of earlier musical performance ...” — Whether Brünauer brought this to Schenker’s attention or whether the latter spotted it himself is unclear.
