Russian pianist, composer, conductor, and teacher. One of the greatest virtuoso pianists of the 19th century. His concert career spanned almost forty years from 1854. He was Director of the St. Petersburg Conservatory from 1862 to 1867 and again from 1887. Schenker seems to have expressed no strong opinions about him, and he used at least one of his compositions (Barcarolle) for teaching purposes.
