Footnotes

1 Schenker’s diary for this day records: “Mrs. Deutsch suggests that I meet with her and her brother [Fritz Mendl] once a week at a coffee house; a suggestion that I immediately turned down, with respect to my being overburdened – at least in this respect. For sake of clarity, I send a postcard to Mrs. Deutsch in the afternoon, with the same content.”

2 “vorgelesen”: Mrs. Deutsch’s lesson notes for March 9 record “first movement analysis,” and on March 16 she proceeds to the second movement, concluding with correction of her analysis of the fourth movement on March 30, after which on April 2 she progresses to “performance” of the first movement, ending on April 30. Perhaps, thus, “vorgelesen” here means that she read out to Schenker her revised analysis of the first movement.
