Variation 22 is constructed over a continuous Bę organ-point, and in his essay of 1924 on the work in Der Tonwille 8–9 Schenker remarks that it has “the character of a musette,” and states “The musette can not be perfectly expressed unless the f2 … receives its proper touch …” (pp. 26, 44; Eng. transl., pp. 97, 112).
