Footnotes

1 Schenker's diary for Wednesday February 24 records: "Weisse presents me with his completed study, 'The Artistic Waltz,' with a dedication!" This was the precursor to his dissertation on the "instrumental art waltz," written under the direction of Guido Adler, with which Weisse gained his PhD from the University of Vienna in 1919. — Wednesday was a regular lesson day for Weisse: he was to present the study to Adler's seminar on Friday 26, which would also have been a normal lesson day.
