Footnotes

1 Bamberger visited Schenker on October 20, and was sent his lesson schedule (presumably two lessons a week) the next day. On February 21, 1921 he requested a third (weekly) lesson (Schenker's diary). He perhaps began with purely theory lessons, for on March 2 Schenker's diary reads: "Bamberger zur ersten Klavierstunde" ("Bamberger for his first piano lesson."

2 Schenker prepared a facsimile edition of this sonata during the 1920/21 saison. According to his diary, he dictated the commentary between November 12 and December 6, 1920.

3 Cf. Schenker's diary, April 20, 1921: "Bamberger bringt ein Exemplar von Schuberts Hmoll-Sinfonie aus dem Archiv; es stellt sich heraus, daß es aus Brahms Nachlass stammt." ("Bamberger brings a copy of Schubert's B minor Symphony from the Archive; it transpires that it is from Brahms's Nachlass.")
