Thern studied piano with Carl Reinecke and Ignaz Moscheles at the Leipzig Conservatory (1864/65), and also with Liszt. Having started his concert career in 1866, he moved to Vienna in 1880, was professor of piano at the Horak'sche Musikschule 1884-, and professor of piano at the Vienna Conservatory (= Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst) from 1900 to his retirement in November 1919 or the end of the 1919/20 academic year (in 1905 he was teaching in the piano Vorbildungsschule).
