A former arm of the Danube River rather than a canal; 17.3 km (c. 11 miles) in length, it is a waterway situated entirely within the city of Vienna. It flows from due north of the city to the south-east, separating the 1st (Innere Stadt) and 3rd (Landstraße) districts from the 2nd district (Leopoldstadt, including the Prater).
