Lawies and Schenker

Lawies was a favourite place for Schenker to visit in the 1900s, and later with Jeanette in the 1920s. The flavor of such a visit is vividly conveyed in a diary entry for April 26, 1924: 1:30 to Tullnerbach – Pressbaum – Lawies; we have coffee there and walk to the forest. Resounding with cuckoo's cries. Lie-Liechen picks cowslips and primroses on a wet meadow. We stop off once again at the restaurant, only to drink a glass of soda water; I give the landlord a 500 Kronen tip – then ask for another cigar and, in spite of the tip just received, the landlord is not ashamed to demand an excess price for the cigar too! Back at 4:30. But we are not due to leave Hütteldorf until 6:15!
