1925: “An Hammer (Br.): die Zeichnung ist untergebracht.” (“To Hammer (letter): the
drawing has been placed.”). — A photocopy of this letter (which is preserved at the New
York Public Library) exists as OJ 5/15a, [14].
2 The buyer of Hammer’s drawing for his
mezzotint portrait of Schenker was Schenker’s brother Moriz. This is documented in the diary; the first mention
is on September 9: “Weisse mit Frau 4¼–8h; will die
Zeichnung von Hammer kaufen, wenn sie nicht Mozio erwirbt.” (“Weisse with his wife 4:15–8:00; wants to buy Hammer’s
drawing if Mozio does not purchase
it.”). Moriz’s purchase is confirmed on
September 17: “Nach der Jause bei Mozio: bleibt bei seinem Wunsch, die Zeichnung anzukaufen.” (“After teatime at
Mozio’s: he sticks to his desire to
purchase the drawing.”).
When visiting Schenker the next day (September 18),
Hammer signed the drawing. Moriz paid
for the drawing on September 21; Schenker probably conveyed the payment during Hammer’s
visit that afternoon: “Um 10h bei Mozio – erhalte 600 Schillinge für Hammer.
[…] — Hammer von 5–8. . . .” (“At 10:00 at Mozio’s – I receive 600 shillings for Hammer. […] Hammer from 5:00 to 8:00.
[…]”). The drawing was delivered to Moriz on September 28: “½5h: Hammer; wir
fahren mit ihm zu Muzio, der noch für
den Rahmen 85 Schilling nachzutragen hat.” (“4:30: Hammer; we ride with him to Muzio’s, who has another 85 shillings to pay
for the frame.”). And on October 11 Schenker reports: “Mein Bruder ist auf die Zeichnung
geradezu stolz!” (“My brother is quite proud of the drawing!”). See also Schenker’s letter
