Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/2, p. 3304, December 29, 1928: "Von der U.-E. Anweisung zur Länderbank." ("From UE instruction to the Provincial Bank."). Receipt of payment is recorded there at OJ 4/2, p. 3305, January 2, 1929: "Bei der Länderbank 2500 S. (von der U.-E.) behoben" (At the Provincial bank, 2,500 shillings (from UE) collected."). This letter exists in two sources: OC 52/915, the dispatched letter with printed letterhead and signatures, and WSLB 404, the carbon copy lacking letterhead and both signatures but initialed. 2 The letter of agreement for the cessation of Der Tonwille, dated December 10, 1925, following the meeting on December 9, does not appear to survive. It provided for four annual installments of 1,250 shillings for Der Tonwille, plus ongoing annual installments of 1,250 shillings for the collected edition of the Beethoven sonatas. For a fuller account of the circumstances surrounding this negotiated settlement, see Ian Bent and William Drabkin, "General Preface," Der Tonwille: Pamphlets/Quarterly Publication ..., vol. II (New York: Oxford University Press, 2005), pp. v‒xii. |
