Footnotes

1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/2, p. 3292, November 24, 1928: "Wir finden von Heck zwei Beethoven-Skizzenblätter vor, die ich sofort als zur VI. Sinfonie gehörend erkenne." ("We find two Beethoven sketch leaves, brought by Heck, which I immediately recognize as belonging to the Sixth Symphony.") As Heck's letter, and B/301 following, makes clear, there was only one sketchleaf: Schenker is mistakenly thinking that the two photographs sent by Heck, respectively of the recto and verso side of the leaf, represent two separate manuscripts.

2 The leaf is today Bonn, Beethovenhaus, HCB Mh 74. Schenker's photographs are preserved at OC B/303–304. Mh 74 belonged originally to the "Pastoral" Symphony sketchbook: see Douglas Johnson, Alan Tyson and Robert Winter, The Beethoven Sketchbooks: History, Reconstruction, Inventory, ed. Douglas Johnson (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1985), pp. 166–73.

3 The correct transcription is "3temal" ("3rd time").
