Footnotes1 Receipt of this postcard and Schenker’s response are recorded in Schenker’s diary for September 9, 1932: “Von Deutsch (K.): hat von v. H. einen Brief erhalten, bittet mich Sonntag ins Aspang-Café! — An Deutsch (K.): ankommen erst Montag, bitte Dienstag ½5h.” (“From Deutsch (postcard): he has received a letter from Hoboken, and asks that we meet on Sunday at the Café Aspang! — To Deutsch (postcard): we don’t arrive until Monday; I invite him for Tuesday at 4:30.”). The Schenkers departed Igls on September 10 arriving Vienna September 12. — Evidently Deutsch wrote the this postcard and OJ 10-3, [178] at the same time to the two different addresses, because he was unsure when the Schenkers were travelling back to Vienna. 2 Their meeting is recorded in Schenker’s diary for September 13: “Deutsch von ½5–8h! Ganz zerbrochen, beleidigt – ich rate von einem Bruch ab.” (“Deutsch from 4:30 to 8 o’clock! Completely shattered, offended – I advise him against breaking off relations.”). 3 “Aspern”: at the time, part of district XXI of Vienna (Floridsdorf); it lies near the site of the Battle of Aspern-Essling (May 1809), in which the Austrian army repelled and nearly defeated the forces of Napoleon. |
