Wenn ich heute etwas später als 5 Uhr kommen sollte, so bitte ich um Voraus um Entschuldigung. Ich habe eben vom Staatsarchiv die Nachricht bekommen, dass einige Mozartakten, die ich gestern gefunden habe und die mir von dringlicher Wichtigkeit für meine eben im Druck befindliche Broschüre 2 sind, heute nachmittags für mich bereit sind. (Sie müssen immer erst durchpaginiert werden, bevor man sie benützen kann.)

I apologize in advance in the event that I should arrive today a little later than 5 o’clock. I have just received news from the State Archive that a few Mozart documents, which I found yesterday and which are of great importance for my little book 2 which has just gone to press, will ready for me this afternoon. (They must always be paginated before one is permitted to use them.)

1 Schenker’s diary does not record receipt of this postcard, but it offers reflections on the evening’s conversation: “Deutsch von ½6–½9h: restlose Aussprache über seine Fluchtpläne. Ein Eingreifen des Ministeriums sei ausgeschlossen, u. so wird das Archiv dem Verfall preisgegeben. Immer das selbe! Noch ehe die Welt von der Bedeutung dieses Schatzes erfuhr, hat sie ihn schon preisgegeben!!” (“Deutsch from 5:30 to 8:30: the conversation exclusively about his escape plans. An intervention from the Ministry is out of the question, and thus the Archive will succumb to decay. Always the same thing! Even before the world learned of the significance of this treasure, it has already sacrificed it!!”).
