Okt. 32 Lieber Verehrter! 1 Ich habe heute mittags zur genannten Stunde (2 Uhr) versucht, Sie telefonisch zu erreichen, aber es meldete sich niemand. So muss ich auf diesem alten Wege fragen, ob Sie Herrn Maischhofer aus Basel 2 noch Samstag vor 4 oder nach 5 ein halbes Stündchen empfangen können. Er ist zwischen 4 und 5 und ab 7 Uhr vergeben. Bitte um telefonischen Bescheid. Heute habe ich für H. die Stelle im Liede „Auf dem Flusse“ nach der Druckvorlage, einer fremden Handschrift mit Korrekturen Schuberts, überprüft. Ohne rechten Dank lehnte H. meine Meinung, dass das D der Singstimme richtig Des [recte Dis] heissen müsse und dass der Auflöser also erst am Anfang des nächsten Taktes stehen dürfe (was Schubert also zu korrigieren übersehen hätte), kaltschnautzig ab, wegen der „Linie“. So I must take this old path to ask you if you are still able to receive Mr Maischhofer of Basel 2 on Saturday, before 4 o’clock or after 5, for half an hour. He is engaged between 4 and 5, and from 7 o’clock. Please let me know by telephone. Today I checked the passage in the song “Auf dem Flusse” for Hoboken against the source that was used for the first edition, a manuscript in a foreign hand with corrections by Schubert. Without thanking me properly, Hoboken insolently dismissed my opinion, that the D in the vocal part should be Dě and that the natural sign ought to be placed at the beginning of the following bar (which Schubert neglected to correct), on account of the “line”. I am interested in your opinion. The B in the manuscript (Schubert’s autograph) is probably a mistake. 3

Footnotes1 Receipt of this postcard and Schenker’s response are recorded in Schenker’s diary for October 22, 1932: “Von Deutsch (K.): kommt mit Prof. Maischhofer aus Basel. — An Prof. Deutsch (teleph.): bitte um ½6h.” (“From Deutsch (postcard): he is coming with Prof. Maischhofer from Basel. To Prof. Deutsch (telephone call): ask him to come at 5:30.”). 2 Bruno Maischhofer (1895–1973), a German pianist and piano teacher based in Basel and Munich, who occasionally performed with the Basel String Quartet. Schenker’s diary records an early evening meeting with Deutsch and Maischhofer, “a dreary German musician.” 3 The note in question is the last note in bar 63, marked below with an asterisk. In Schubert’s autograph manuscript, this is a b1. In the first edition, which was prepared from a copy containing the composer’s handwritten corrections, it is a dĚ 2. |
