Footnotes1 Receipt of this postcard and of OJ 11/36, [22] of the same date, as well the sending of Schenker’s non-extant reply are recorded in the diary entry for September 17, 1925: “Von Hammer (zwei gleichlautende pneum. Karten: möchte morgen für eine halbe Stunde kommen. — An Hammer (K.): nenne einige Möglichkeiten.” (“From Hammer (two pneumatic postcards with the same content): he would like to come tomorrow for a half hour. — To Hammer (postcard): a few possible times.”).
2 The visit
took place on September 18: “Hammer von 11–12h;
korrigirt noch, signiert die Zeichnung. Bitte ihn für Montag um 5h zur Jause.“ (“Hammer from 11:00–12 noon; is still making
corrections, signs the drawing. I ask him to come for teatime on Monday at 5:00 o'clock.”). Hammer
was making corrections to the second plate for the mezzotint portrait; see OJ 11/36, [20] of September 11, 1925.
Hammer’s next visit is described in the diary entry for September 21: “Hammer von
5–8h. Er bringt die Platte u. zwei Abzüge u. berät
sich sogar mit uns über so manches. Lie-Liechen stellt sich überraschend gut ein, was mir
die Möglichkeit gibt, mich weiter nicht um die Sache zu bekümmern. Hammer scheinen einige
ihrer Bemerkungen von Nutzen zu sein. Im Gespräch sucht Hammer wieder Analogien von Musik
u. Malerei festzustellen.” (“Hammer from 5:00 to 8:00 o’clock. He brings the plate and two
prints and even confers on a few things with us. Lie-Liechen interacts surprisingly well,
which gives me the opportunity not to worry about the matter any further. Several of her
observations seem to have been useful to Hammer. In our discussion, Hammer again tries to
identify analogies between music and painting.”). |
