Sehr verehrter Herr Professor! 1

Greatly revered Professor [Schenker], 1

To my most unpleasant surprise, I notice that my next scheduled lesson is not for two weeks, and therefore ask you whether I might not also come this Saturday, the 5th. 2 If this is not possible, I will of course not pester you, and shall not come until next week. 3

With very kind regards,
Your truly devoted

Footnotes

1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 3/6, p. 2651, April 1, 1924: "Von Frau Komorn (K.): bittet, schon diesen Samstag kommen zu dürfen." ("From Frau Komorn (postcard): asks to be allowed to come already this Saturday.").

2 Schenker's response is recorded in his diary at OJ 3/6, p. 2651, April 1, 1924: "An sie (K.): geht nicht wegen Frl. Kahn, wegen der Schwierigkeiten um das 6. Heft." ("To her (postcard): that will not work on account of Miss Kahn [for whom a lesson is recorded on April 5] and on account of the difficulties surrounding the sixth issue [of Der Tonwille]."). (No dates are given for Komorn in lessonbook 1923/24 other than the final one on May 24.)

3 Further light on Mrs. Komorn and lessons is cast by a diary entry at OJ 3/6, p. 2647, March 22, 1924: "Mrs. Komorn comes with an injured hand; a theory lesson is unavoidable – she unpacks the recitative [from the St. Matthew Passion]! Has gone totally astray! I conclude with Op. 129 and distract her from the recitative; she reads out a letter from Mrs. Michelson, in which she requests a daily lesson for September. I explain that by no means can I declare my consent, since various obstacles (could arise) could stand in her way [sic]. — Made two excerpts from Bach recitative in color."
