Endlich ist alles hinter mir und ich atme auf. Gestern gab ich meinen ersten Klavierabend und hatte einen großen Erfolg. Zwar ist mir naturgemäß nicht alles geglückt, wie ich es haben wollte, aber die Leute fanden es sehr schön und haben mit Beifall nicht gespart. Ich freue mich sehr, umsomehr, als ich wirklich fleissig war und die Sachen im Schlaf auch hätte spielen können. Ich lege Ihnen ein Programm und die ersten erschienen Kritiken bei. Heute gab ich vor versammeltem Erziehungsrat eine Probelektion, die mir ganz gut geglückt ist, wenigstens hoffe ich es sehr. Nun muß ich noch bis Ende September warten, bis die Wahl stattfindet. Die Konkurrenz ist sehr scharf und es sind einige tüchtige Leute dabei. ²

Nächsten Montag habe ich das zweifelhafte Vergnügen, einrücken zu müssen, und zwar als {2} Militärtrompeter. Zum Glück dauert es nur bis 22. September, aber ich wüsste die Zeit auch besser anzuwenden. So habe ich eigentlich nur zwei Tage Ferien, aber die genieße ich um so mehr. Mein erstes ist, Ihnen zu schreiben, und das ist wohl nicht mehr wie recht, habe ich doch Ihnen alles zu verdanken. Ich merke eigentlich wohl jetzt so recht, wie viel ich bei Ihnen gelernt habe und freue mich schon jetzt darauf, bei Ihnen weiter arbeiten zu können, sei es schon im Oktober, wenn ich die Stelle nicht bekomme oder erst zu Weihnachten, wenn ich sie erhalte.

Und nun wünsche ich Ihnen noch weiter recht schöne Ferien ³ und verbleibe mit den besten Grüßen auch von Seiten meiner Eltern

Finally everything is behind me and I can breathe freely. Yesterday I gave my first evening piano recital and it was a great success. True, not every single thing went well as I would have liked, naturally enough; but the audience found it to their liking and were not ungenerous in their applause. I am very pleased, the more so since I had worked really hard and could even have played the pieces in my sleep. I enclose a program and the first reviews to appear. Today I gave a trial lesson before the entire Board of Education, which went really well, at least I really hope so. Now I have to wait until the end of September, when the vote takes place. The competition was very stiff and there were some able people among candidates. ²

Next Monday I face the dubious pleasure of having to enlist, what’s more as a {2} military trumpeter. Fortunately, it lasts only until September 22, but I could have put the time to better use. Consequently, I actually have only two days’ holiday, but I shall enjoy them all the more [as a result]. My first priority is to write to you, and that is only right and proper since I have you to thank for all of this. I really do now appreciate just how much I have learned from you, and am delighted that I will now be able to continue my studies with you, whether as soon as October if I don’t get the job, or not until Christmas if I do.
