1 Receipt of this letter is recorded at OJ 2/1, p. 98, January 14, 1916: "Brief von Karpath worin er sich mit der Vorbemerkung einverstanden erklärt u. mich um eine Einbegleitung ersucht. Antwort an ihn (res[illeg]); sende Einbegleitung im Namen der Redaktion u. im eigenen ad libitum ein Postskriptum, worin ich Brahms von der Rolle des Kronzeugen für die Musikhistoriker, siehe Adlers Aufsatz, bereinige." ("Letter from Karpath in which he declares himself happy with the "Preliminary Remark," and asks me for an introduction. Answer to him (by return): I send introduction over the name of the editorial office, and over my own name ad libitum a postscript in which I exonerate Brahms from the role of principal witness for the music historian, see Adler's article.").
