Die Theorie R. war mir, wie ich gestehen muß, nicht bekannt gewesen u. was Sie darüber sagen, hat mich natürlich sehr interessiert. Aber, lieber Freund, Sie wundern sich, wenn das Minist. keine Notiz von Ihnen nimmt, ³ dasselbe Minist. das doch von den nämlichen Leuten informiert wird (denn daß ein Minister oder Sektionschef wirklich etwas von seiner Ressort versteht werden Sie doch nicht verleugnen?), denen Sie beständig schallende Ohrfeigen versetzen? Ja, ich weiß nicht, ob Sie, wenn Sie in Deutschland lebten, nicht auch durch Ihre lebendige Gegenwart eine Clique erzeugen würde, die sich gegen Sie wendet!

I have just received the copy in question (vol. III) and have already leafed through the first essay ² with great pleasure – at present I again have frightfully much to do! – {verso} and am greatly looking forward to the moment in which I can chew through it for the second time, more graciously and properly. Rameau’s theory, I must confess, was unknown to me, and what you say about it has, naturally, interested me a great deal. But, dear friend, you are surprised that the Ministry takes no interest in you, ³ the same Ministry which is, however, informed by the same people (for you would surely not deny that a minister or head of section understands something about his department?) to whom you persistently deal resounding slaps in the face? Indeed, I do not know whether, if you lived in Germany, you might not, by your lively presence, generate a clique that would turn against you!
