Footnotes1 Receipt of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/4, p. 3598, March 20, 1931: "Von Weisse (K. expreß, mittags): werde mit Furtwängler nach dem Abendessen kommen." ("From Weisse (express postcard, delivered midday): he will come with Furtwängler after supper."). 2 An account of the visit is given in Schenker's diary the same day: "Abends Weisse u. Furtwängler (essen doch!). Meine Angelegenheit kommt nicht zur Sprache! Ich lese den Mozart-Brief vor, der auf F. stärksten Eindruck macht. Im Weggehen flüstert Weisse Lie-Liechen zu, daß sich F. ihm gegenüber verpflichtet habe." ("In the evening, Weisse and Furtwängler (who nonetheless have something to eat!). My matter does not figure in the conversation! I read out the Mozart letter, which makes a very strong impression upon Furtwängler. As he takes his leave, Weisse whispers to Lie-Liechen that Furtwängler has given his promise to him [to assist Schenker financially]."). |
