Footnotes

Writing of this postcard is not recorded in Schenker's diary.

Probably OJ 5/18, 50, August 7, 1934.

The visit occurred August 14‒16. Schenker records in his diary: [14th]: "Towards 1 o'clock, the Hobokens appear for lunch; we stay with them until 2 o'clock. ‒ The couple go to Badgastein; Hoboken will return at 4:30. ‒ Towards 4 o’clock it brightens up. ‒ At 4:30, Hoboken for afternoon snack; at 7 o'clock, Dr. Violin with Mrs. van Hoboken, then they all go back to Badgastein." — [15th:] "Hoboken at 10:45, stays until after 12 o'clock, takes nine articles with him. [...]; at 5:45 Hoboken comes, after 6 o'clock Mrs. Hoboken; I read [Hugo von Hofmannsthal's] The Death of Titian aloud, and other things. ‒ At 7 o'clock they go to Gastein." — [16th:] "Mr.and Mrs. Hoboken come at 12 o'clock, have lunch with us; Mrs. Hoboken photographs us, shows us a picture of the model of their house. From across the table, Lie-Liechen whispers to me that Mrs. Hoboken told her that her husband was prepared to pay the difference if we wished to move into an apartment on the periphery, with use of the garden – I turn to him and, genuinely touched, thank him, also for his words: but I should stay in the countryside until the middle of September in order to recover properly. Kreisler really owns the manuscript of Brahms's Violin Concerto; he will allow it to be photographed at a convenient time! — After lunch, they drive through the tunnel towards the south!".

"Messe": alternatively, "to attend Mass."
