1 There is no surviving message from Kalbeck to explain the implication of this sentence. Eugen d’Albert’s letter to Schenker, OJ 9/6, [29], of late February or the beginning of March, asks Schenker to draw Gustav Mahler’s attention to d’Albert’s new opera, Die Abreise,– a task Schenker would hardly have welcomed and seems not to have executed.
