15./II 1903

Liebe Frau Mama Violin,

February 15, 1903

Dear Mrs. Violin,

You know that I love Jehovah, and am acquainted with his goodness and wisdom.

So, then, believe me, the way it came about was good. 1 We suffer pain for it, but in that very fact is Jehova’s wisdom to be honored. He takes the pain, and only then does one grasp how well God means by his creatures.

Rejoice over your recovered dear son, and come soon to Vienna, 2 to your friends, who will comfort you. Among these as ever is counted

Footnotes

1 Reference is presumably to the manner of Nina Violin’s death. Schenker also wrote a letter of condolence to Moriz Violin the next day (the day after the funeral), OJ 6/4, [23].

2 We do not know where Mrs. Violin was living at this time, but the implication seems to be that she did not attend Nina’s funeral on February 15.
