STUTTGART UND BERLIN

STUTTGART, den 2. Juni 1908.

Herrn Dr. Heinrich Schenker
Wien III. Reisnerstr. 38

Sehr geehrter Herr Doktor! 1

STUTTGART AND BERLIN

STUTTGART, June 2, 1908

Dr. Heinrich Schenker

Dear Dr. [Schenker], 1

We have received the enclosed postcard from Mr. Rudolf M. Breithausen 2 in Charlottenburg, Knesebeckstraße 88III and should be glad to know from you whether in this and possible future cases we ought to divulge your name. 3 This has in fact already happened in the review of your book published in the Neues Wiener Tagblatt on the 18th of last month; 4 but we are unclear whether you had this in mind, hence we take the liberty of making the above inquiry.

With kind regards,

Footnotes

1 Receipt of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary. Cotta's carbon copy, with canceled and illegible pencil annotation in top margin, is CA78.

2 Schenker underlines "Breithausen" and writes in the left margin "soll heißen Breithaupt" ("name should be 'Breithaupt'").

3 Harmonielehre was first published anonymously in 1906, as "by an artist"; Schenker's name appeared on the title-page for the 1910 edition, after Kontrapunkt I had been published with his name.

4 i.e. May 18, 1908 (unsigned): preserved in OC 2/p. 20, item 5 (on two sheets). Schenker's identity is not disclosed in the text of the review: he is referred to always as "Der Verfasser" ("the author"), and the review concludes with "es sind eben Phantasien, aber die eines Künstlers!" ("they are precisely fantasies, but those of an artist!"). It is possible that his name was disclosed in a footnote.
