Footnotes

1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary for May 6, 1926: “Von Albersheim (Br.): Anmeldung für den Herbst.” (“From Albersheim (letter): Enrollment for the Fall.”).

2 Albersheim began lessons with Schenker on October 5, 1926, at twelve lessons a month, and continued until June 14, 1929 (lessonbooks), at which point he got married, remaining in Vienna but dropping his lessons. Schenker wrote him a letter of recommendation at his last lesson. His place in Schenker’s schedule was given to Erich Voss (OJ 5/7a, [23], May 15, 1929). — For further on Albersheim’s pupillage, see Ian Bent, "Schenker as Teacher: The Case of Gerhard Albersheim," Journal of Schenkerian Studies, vol. 4 (2010), 35–68.

3 Felix Hupka had been Schenker's pupil since a recommendation by Eugen d'Albert in 1912, cf. Hellmut Federhofer, Heinrich Schenker nach Tagebüchern und Briefen ... (Hildesheim: Georg Olms, 1985), p. 68. He advised Albersheim to take lessons with Schenker (ibid., p. 35).
