Lieber Herr Doctor!

Diese Zeilen unter strengster Discretion! – Die Direction der Volksoper in Wien (Simons 1 ) möchte gerne meine neue Oper „Flauto Solo“ 2 zur Aufführung bringen. Was soll ich tun? Wie sind die Kräfte, die Aufführ[un]gen, die Kapellmeister in diesem Theater? – „Flauto Solo“ habe ich Mahler noch gar nicht angeboten, – vielleicht ist es nicht richtig, das Werk einem andern Theater zu geben, ehe M. es abgelehnt hat. Bitte mir freu[n]d[lich] Rath und wennmöglich umgehend. 3

Mit herzlichen Grüßen
Ihr

Viele Grüße von meiner Frau

Dear Dr. [Schenker],

I write in strictest confidence! – The management of the Volksoper in Vienna (Simons 1 ) would very much like to put on my new opera Flauto Solo. 2 What should I do? What are the resources of this theater, how are the performances, the conductors? – I have not yet offered Flauto Solo to Mahler. – Perhaps it is not right to give the work to another theater before M. has turned it down. Please, in friendship, give me your advice, and if possible by return of post. 3

With cordial greetings,
Your

Warm greetings from my wife

Footnotes

1 Rainer Simons, director and producer. In 1905 the conductors at the Volksoper (People’s Opera House) were Alexander von Zemlinsky, Oskar Posa, K. Severin, and O. Weber. It had a maximum-sized orchestra of 60 and choir of 55 (R. Heuberger, ed. Musikbuch aus Oesterreich, 1905, p. 100).

2 Flauto solo: musical comedy, libretto by H. von Wolzogen, first performance Prague, November 12, 1905. It was performed at the Vienna Court Opera in 1906 on November 28, December 1, 8, and 11.

3 No correspondence items from Schenker to d’Albert are known to survive, and Schenker’s diary does not cover 1905 (other than to report his summer vacation whereabouts), therefore we do not know what advice he gave, though Zemlinsky’s and Posa’s membership of the circle around Schoenberg might well have biassed him against that institution.
