Hermine d’Albert (née Finck)
born Baden Baden, January 1, 1872; died Berlin, October 31, 1932
Documents associated with this person:
German soprano; third wife of Eugen d’Albert.
After study in Frankfurt and Leipzig Hermine Finck joined the Weimar Court Theatre, of which she became a regular member. Her singing of the Witch’s role at the première of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel in 1893 brought her to prominence. She met Eugen d’Albert through Richard Strauss, and the couple were married on October 21, 1895.
Many of the Lieder that d’Albert produced in the following decade were written for her voice, as was the scena for solo voice and orchestra Seejungfräulein, Op. 15 (1897), and she created the role of Waltrudis in d’Albert’s opera Gernot, premièred at Mannheim in April 1897.
The marriage was in difficulties by late 1909, and the couple divorced in 1911, after which she moved to Berlin resuming work on the opera stage and latterly in concert work and teaching.
