Herzliche Grüße in rasender Eile

TELEGRAM ADDRESS: Sternhotel Prag
Prague, November 8, 19 03 [recte 05]

Dear Dr. [Schenker], 1

I will be very happy to fulfil your wish: 2 I wrote already yesterday to Brockhaus – as a preliminary inquiry – for the publisher F. Brockhaus 3 would have to take up the matter, and not my publisher, Max Brockhaus. 4

Sunday is the première here of my new opera, Flauto solo. 5 The work would be bound to interest you especially, because it has many cultural-historical elements to it. I would be hugely delighted if you were to come. {2} Please drop me a line so that I can have a seat reserved for you. 6

Cordial greetings in frantic haste,
Your
[signed:] Eugen d’Albert.

Première: Sunday the 12th!

Do work on it, dear Dr. [Schenker]!

Footnotes

1 Federhofer gives this letter in full in Heinrich Schenker nach Tagebüchern und Briefen (Hildesheim: Georg Olms Verlag, 1985), pp. 64–65.

2 Schenker has asked d’Albert for help in finding a publisher for his Harmonielehre . He had already approached Universal Edition and received an initial discouraging response (April 13, 1905). He then approached Breitkopf & Härtel, who had asked for the manuscript (June 26), received it and sent a rejection (September 6), after which he had gone back to Universal Edition, who had asked for sight of the manuscript (October 21). D’Albert has now agreed to intercede in support of his application. See OJ 9/6, [45], November 14, for the reply from Brockhaus.
More importantly, on the same day, November 13, d’Albert also wrote to the publisher J. G. Cotta of Stuttgart – successfully, as Cotta’s letter to him of November 14, OJ 9/31, [2], attests: “The fact that you, highly revered Sir, have undertaken to intercede is for us a mark of its literary and artistic worth, and prompts us to ask Dr. Schenker to send us the manuscript ....” This step led to the eventual publication by Cotta of not only the Harmonielehre (1906) but also Kontrapunkt I (1910).

3 Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus (1772–1823) founded the firm F. A. Brockhaus in Leipzig in 1806. It was this firm that acquired the Conversations-Lexikon, originated in 1796–1808, which was renamed Der Große Brockhaus in 1928 and Brockhaus Enzyklopädie in 1966. — Max Brockhaus (1867–1957) founded the firm Musikverlag Max Brockhaus in Leipzig in 1893. He was the publisher of works by Humperdinck, Leoncavallo, d’Albert, Pfitzner, Siegfried Wagner, and others. (MGG, 1973, and wikipedia)

4 No paragraph break at this point in source.

5 Flauto solo: musical comedy, libretto by H. von Wolzogen, first performance Prague, November 12, 1905.

6 There is no direct evidence that Schenker attended d’Albert’s opera Flauto solo on November 12, 1905 (his diary for 1905 is empty other that a brief summer entry), but that he did so can be inferred from the remark in paragraph 2 of OJ 9/6, [45a] (undated) in conjunction with the remark concerning Cotta in paragraph 1 of the same letter.
