Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor!

(freier Rand)
(hier Text) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Takt 71ff.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

[overwritten across paras 1–2:] Erl[edi]gt

I[h]r ergeb[ener]

Dear Director,

Please would you be so kind as to instruct Leipzig 1 for future reference that the measure-number indications by me that have been placed at the beginning of a section of text in the Analysis sections 2 are to be considered as marginal indications, for example like this:

(outer margin)
(Text here) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . bars 71ff
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

[overwritten across paras 1–2:] Dealt with

By this means, the reader has the advantage of having at his fingertips information concerning any measure that interests him.

However, under the heading "Performance" things remain as the printers have done them, i.e. so that the numbers are not marginal numbers.

{2} I shall get the corrected proofs to you within the next few days; nevertheless, I shall write to you about them a little before then, in order to prevent the printers from setting the further gatherings exactly as they have done the first ones.

With best wishes,
Your devoted
