Footnotes1 This entry appears also on p. 94 against the item on Messina, but unlike the latter has not been deleted here. The disaster referred to is the great earthquake of December 28, 1908, which all but destroyed the city. — The Neue freie Presse for January 5 did not include a supplement; however, it did contain a lengthy report on p. 4 (as well as a more detailed one on pp. 7‒9, and a shorter report in the evening edition), entitled "Ein Rudgang durch das zerstörte Messina" ("A Tour of the Destroyed Messina"), with the by-line "Telegram unseres Spezialkorrespondenten" ("Telegram from our Special Correspondent"). It was evidently the word "telegram" that has aroused Schenker: he contrasts unfavorably the matter-of-fact "telegraphic" reporting of the 1908 Messina destruction in the Neue freie Presse with the poetic reports of the destruction of Troy in The Illiad thousands of years ago and of the destruction of Messina in 1783 in Goethe's Italienische Reise (1878). |
