Von Frl. Kahn u. Elias erfahre ich, daß Fr. Deutsch in Mariazell in einem Hotel zweiten Ranges abgestiegen, sich hierauf in große Toilette gestürzt, u. ins Hotel 1. Ranges hinübergelaufen sei, wo sie dann allerhand pianistisch Dummes u. Dümmstes zum besten gab! Wie doch diese Frau von jämmerlichster Eitelkeit zerzaust wird!!

Thus Gänsbacher himself is said to have reported – but how much he must have suppressed, if he could bring himself to recount the following – that during a chamber music rehearsal he cried out to Brahms: "Johannes, why are you playing so loud? I cannot hear myself at all." Whereupon Brahms replied, "You lucky man!" Gänsbacher also recounted that once Brahms, allegedly out of anger, cried out to him: "You're good enough only to study with dilettantes." A definition which, as Miss Kahn says, was just as to the point as everything else that Brahms composed!

Mrs. Kolischer writes to me once again, and indeed she "takes the liberty of informing me ...," as literally, and as brazenly, that she shall come to the Tuesday lesson as early as 3:15 to make a reply to my letter. To this letter I reply, briefly and concisely, that the Tuesday lesson cannot take place at all on account of the holiday ¹ , and that therefore I ask her to come promptly at 3:30 on the 13th of the month. I added, as reason for the latter, the overburdening on account of the subsequent lessons. But that the "lady" will still not tire of chasing after secondary advantages, thus for example: whether she could not take part in the tuition (as a second pupil!), or whether she could snatch a quarter of an hour's conversation before the lesson, and more swinishness of this sort!

I learn from Miss Kahn and Miss Elias that Mrs. Deutsch scaled back at a second-class hotel in Mariazell, subsequently came down in full dress and walked over to the first-class hotel, where she then did her best with all manner of pianistic nonsense! How this woman is ruffled by the most wretched vanity!!
