— Wer die Unfähigkeit der Reichen kennt, kann sich auch schon nur auf logischem Wege ein Bild von der Minderwertigkeit jenes Ausschnittes der französischen oder englische rn Kultur machen, zu dem sie sich so hingezogen fühlen! Verständen sie sich auf Goethe, Jean Paul, Bach, Beethoven, so blieben sie doch wohl auch zuhause, hauptsächlich aber schon aus dem Grunde, weil sie in Frankreich oder England Ebenbürtiges nicht finden. Aber auch das Beste der französischen u. englischen Kultur ist ihnen ebenoswenig zugänglich, wie das Beste der Heimat. Und so bleibt nur [illeg]übrig zu schließen, daß, wenn sie statt nach Grinzing nach dem Pariser Montemartre pilgern, sie schließlich doch nur das „Grinzingerische“ suchen u. finden u. nur – was die Hauptsache ist – den Mitbürgern die Augen ein wenig auswischen u. ihren Neid erregen wollen.

— Anyone who recognizes the inability of the rich can, in a logical way, also form a picture of inferiority of that strand of French or English culture to which they feel themselves so drawn! If they had an understanding of Goethe, Jean Paul, Bach, and Beethoven, they would surely be happy staying at home, primarily because they will not find their equal in France or England. But even the best of French and English culture is just as inaccessible to them as is the best that is home-grown. And so it remains only to conclude that, if instead of going to Grinzing they make a pilgrimage to Montmartre in Paris, they would in the end seek and find only the "Grinzing-ish" and – this is the main point – they would rub the eyes of their fellow citizens a bit and arouse their envy.
