—{825} Von Gärtner wird Montag kommen. — Von Sophie Paket (expreß). abends): 1 Laib Brot u. ein Stück, Karotten, Zigarren, Zigaretten. — Während einer Nachmittagsstunde gibt der Gasofen plötzlich einen heftigen Knall von sich, die Luft ist von Gasgeruch erfüllt, ich muß die Fenster öffnen, den Gashahn schließen u. finde den Mut nicht, den Ofen wieder anzuzünden, so daß die beiden Stunden im ungeheizten Raume vor sich gehen. Daß mir dieser Fall Sorge machte war begreiflich, denn den Ofen vielleicht abtragen u. zur Kohlenheizung zurückkehren zu müssen, wäre unter den heutigen Umständen ein überaus undankbares Geschäft.

—{825} From Gärtner (postcard): he will come on Monday. — From Sophie packet (express mail, evening): 1 loaf plus a hunk of bread, carrots, cigars, cigarettes. — During an afternoon lesson, the gas oven suddenly gives a mighty bang, the air is full of the smell of gas, I have to open the windows, turn off the gas cock, but cannot pluck up the courage to relight the oven, so the two lessons have to go ahead in the unheated room. It was clear that this situation presented me with a problem, for it would be altogether unthinkable under today’s conditions to contemplate having the oven taken out and to have to go back to heating by coal.
