Of course there is currently nothing visible, the art of music is being buried. — To Weisse (letter, eight pages in length!): I go through point by point; I am not sensitive and also only set the personal errors of my students right when necessary. In writing, I agglomerate the thrust of the arguments and in personal interactions I touch on the material lightly, so as not to appear tyrannical. If emptiness, coldness comes across, it is the necessary consequence of that, and there is no remedy for it because any further emphasis of my position would be interpreted as coercion, proof: the misinterpretation of the reference to the Frankfurter Zeitung as an education to read the Frankfurter Zeitung. In the case of Warburg, I had to defend my patriotism deeply against the unreasonable request: just as one defends one's house and money against all ideas, I likewise defend the depth; but I appreciate every form of patriotism, no matter how uncritical it is, because it is still more uplifting than cosmopolitan patriotism, which is also superfluous as long as all peoples, with the exception of the Germans and the Jews, patriotically keep an eye on themselves anyway.
